It was formerly part of Kitgum District. In 2000, two counties of Kitgum District Agago and Avu became Pader district.
LOCATION
It boarders Kotido in the east, Gulu in the west, Sudan in the north and Lira and Apac in the South.
POPULATION
The district has over 293,679 people. 147,200 are female and 146,479 are Male.

Luo and Acholi.
ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES
Agriculture with main emphasis on food crops such as millet, potatoes, beans, Simsim and sunflower. Cash crops include cotton, and Vegetables are Cabbage, Tomatoes and Onions.
EDUCATION SERVICES
The district has a total of 195 primary schools with 176 government, 2 private and 17 community schools. For secondary schools, the district has over 15 schools, 8 are government, 5 private and 2 community.
There is 1 technical institute.
HEALTH SERVICES
The district has 10 Government dispensaries (II), 6 health centres (III) at county, 1 health centre (IV) at sub-district with 1 hospital. More so, it has 1 private/NGO dispensary, 1 health centre (III) and 1 hospital- Kalongo Hospital.
